At the end of June 2018, I retired from a job I’d enjoyed for over twenty years and left a city I’d lived in since childhood to start a new life on Vancouver Island. Sidney, a town of about 12,000 folks, is about four and a half thousand kilometers west and several thousand light years away from Toronto. Sidney By the Sea
On a clear day, looking east from Sidney Pier, across the Haro Strait and past the San Juan Islands, you can see the snowy peak of Mount Baker in Washington State, USA.
This Personal Flotation Device lending kiosk sums up the way of life here - part Lake Wobegon, part Mitford, and part Mayberry RFD. In Hogtown this stand would be tagged with graffiti, and the life jackets gone in a heartbeat.
